While an ever-evolving multigenerational legacy of Afro-Latinidad is illuminated by art movements drawing inspiration from magical realism, fantasy and a new emerging Afro American and Latin leadership across disciplines, the African diaspora continues to pursue and push for global human rights and social justice.
To this day, Martin Luther King, Jr.’s vision of equality and justice for all imbues artists to consider and promote a deeper understanding of the historical and actual inequalities that prevent a more just society from emerging.
eMeLe-K aims to bring attention to the observance of domestic/international human rights, with an emphasis on healing, reconciliation, and a better future shared by all.
The eMeLe-K project is a heartfelt cultural homage to Dr. King’s legacy curated for Teatro LATEA by former New York Public Librarian, LES community member and author Rodger Taylor and Miguel Trelles, co-Executive Director at LATEA.
Taylor and Trelles initiated this project in 2018 but Rodger Taylor passed away after the 2019 edition.
As a whole the project provides a forum where Afro-Latinos, African Americans and all who believe in Dr. King’s life example and respect his memory can actively engage in artistic exchanges that celebrate the Civil Rights movement in the US and the tremendous contributions that Afro-Latinos have made and continue to make in society.
